Shillong, April 13: A late-night vice raid was conducted on April 11 at around 11:30 PM under the supervision of Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg, IPS, SDPO Pynursla B. Wanswet, MPS, along with other police officials in key areas including Police Bazar, near Presbyterian Church, IGP Point, and other prominent public locations.
The operation was carried out following repeated complaints from the public regarding obscene acts, solicitation, and nuisance allegedly caused by sex workers in these areas.
During the raid, police observed several individuals reportedly engaging in prostitution activities in public spaces, including approaching passersby, making gestures, and attempting to solicit customers. Authorities stated that such actions were causing disturbance, obstruction, and annoyance to the general public, while also affecting the sanctity of nearby religious places and important locations.
A total of 16 sex workers were detained during the operation. Subsequently, a case has been registered against them under Section 110 of the Meghalaya Police Act.
Police officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining public order and addressing concerns raised by residents regarding such activities in busy and sensitive areas of the city.
