24-Hour Curfew Imposed in West Garo Hills Amid Tension Over GHADC Election

Tura, March 10 : The District Magistrate of West Garo Hills, Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, has imposed a 24-hour curfew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the district and opposition to the participation of non-tribals in the General Election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), 2026.

According to the order issued on March 9, 2026, the curfew will remain in force from 12:00 a.m. on March 10, 2026 to 12:00 a.m. on March 11, 2026 across the entire West Garo Hills district.

The District Magistrate stated that there is a possibility of obstruction or intimidation affecting the movement of vehicles, which could disrupt normal public life and cause inconvenience to the general public. Authorities also warned that such incidents could lead to breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility, and possible loss of life or property.

Under the curfew order, several activities have been prohibited during the specified period. These include causing obstruction to the movement of vehicles, carrying or concealing weapons such as lathis, sticks, stones, missiles, firearms or other lethal weapons, and obstructing the lawful functioning of shops, establishments and offices.

The order also prohibits unlawful assembly of five or more persons aimed at causing any such obstruction.

Authorities have warned that any violation of the order will attract penal provisions under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant legal provisions.

The curfew has been imposed as an emergency measure to prevent any breach of peace and ensure public safety, and it will remain in force until further orders.
