25,000 Meghalaya Teachers Must Clear TET by 2027 to Retain Jobs: Rymbui

Shillong, March 23 : Over 25,000 in-service teachers in Meghalaya will be required to pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) by August 31, 2027, to comply with a Supreme Court directive, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has stated. Citing the apex court’s order issued on September 1, 2025, Rymbui said that all teachers—both existing and newly recruited—must possess TET qualification for elementary education, with the ruling applying retrospectively.

The Minister clarified that teachers who do not have TET qualification since their date of appointment must appear for and clear the examination. This includes those nearing retirement, even with only five years of service remaining. He added that failure to pass the TET would affect career progression, particularly promotions.

The Education Department has issued a notification and initiated enrolment for special TET examinations, with dates already scheduled. Rymbui urged teachers to take the requirement seriously. “All teachers should apply and pass so that future complications do not affect them,” he said.

According to a notification issued by Director of Educational Research & Training J.U. Kharpuri on March 18, online applications for the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) will be open from March 23 to April 9 until 5 PM. The examination is tentatively scheduled to be held on May 29, 2026.

The move is aimed at aligning Meghalaya’s teaching standards with national norms and ensuring quality education in elementary schools across the state.
