27–28 Arrested in Garo Hills Violence; Curfew and Internet Ban to Continue

Shillong, March 16 : At least 27 to 28 people have been arrested so far in connection with the recent violent protests in the Garo Hills region, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong, who holds the Home (Police) portfolio, confirmed that multiple arrests have been made as part of the ongoing investigation into the unrest. “Not less than 27–28 arrests have been made so far,” he said, adding that the police investigation is still underway and further arrests cannot be ruled out.

“Let the police go ahead with the detailed investigation. I cannot say right now. Maybe some more will be arrested,” the Deputy Chief Minister stated. He said the authorities have directed law enforcement agencies to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future.

Tynsong also clarified that the investigation is not limited to West Garo Hills district alone but could extend across the entire region. “Not necessarily only in West Garo Hills. It should be in the entire region. Maybe from Shillong also, but let the investigation take place. We will go up to the end point of the issue,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister further confirmed that the government is examining FIRs that reportedly name former legislator Esmatur Mominin. However, he declined to comment specifically on the reported arrest of former MDC Sofior Rahman, saying the matter is part of the ongoing probe. “Let the investigation go on,” he said.

Meanwhile, the state government has decided to continue curfew restrictions during evening hours while the situation is being closely monitored. Tynsong also indicated that the internet shutdown currently in place will remain for the time being, though the government will review the situation before taking a decision on lifting the restrictions.

“Right now curfew will continue in the evening and at the same time we will see how fast we will be able to lift the curfew and also to lift the ban on internet,” he added.
