10,000 Yaba Tablets Seized, Two Women Arrested in East Jaintia Hills, Assault, Thefts in Meghalaya

Shillong January 14, : Meghalaya Police are investigating a variety of criminal activities reported across the state, including online fraud, physical assault, thefts, a drug seizure, and extortion.

  • Drug Seizure (East Jaintia Hills): A significant drug bust in Ratacherra has resulted in the seizure of 10,000 yaba tablets and the arrest of two women.
    On January 11th at approximately 1 PM, police, along with the Ratacherra anti-infiltration staff, conducted a vehicle check and intercepted a vehicle (ML-05AC-2916). During the search, they recovered and seized twenty-five pouches, each containing 200 contraband tablets, from Esther Vunghoihching (37 years old), wife of Balminthon Sangma, residing in Lapalang, Mawbynna, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya. A further twenty-five pouches, also containing 200 tablets each, were recovered from Nianenciin (45 years old), wife of Khamkhenthang, residing in Bethel Veng, New Lamka, Churachanpur subdivision, Manipur, who was travelling in the same vehicle.
    Preliminary on-site testing confirmed the seized substance as Amphetamine (a key component of yaba tablets). A criminal case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the two women, identified as interstate drug traffickers.
  • Abandoned Motorcycles (East Jaintia Hills): An early morning police chase in the Wahkoh area under Umkiang Police Patrol Post (PPP) has resulted in the recovery of two abandoned motorcycles.
    At approximately 4:00 AM on January 11th, police signaled two motorcycles to stop for a routine check. However, the riders sped away, leading to a pursuit by the officers. The riders subsequently abandoned the motorcycles—one with registration number AS-11C-0711 and the other without a registration plate—and fled the scene.
    The recovered motorcycles are currently being held in safe custody at the Umkiang PPP. Police are investigating the incident to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
  • Online Fraud (Shillong): A Shillong resident has reported being cheated of ₹1,03,100 while attempting to purchase a used electronic drum set online. The victim filed a complaint stating that the fraud occurred on January 9th through the online music app “Bajaao Connect App.”
  • Residential Burglary (Shillong): Bijou Lyngdoh reported a burglary at his residence in Nongthymmai Dum Dum, Shillong, on January 12th. Items stolen included a TV set and four watches.
  • Extortion and Threats (West Garo Hills): The President of the All Garo Hills Archery Association in Tura filed a complaint against several members of the A’chik Indigenous Sports Institute (AISI) for allegedly extorting Rs. 200 per counter per day from his archery counters since January 10th and threatening his employees if they did not comply.
  • Scooter Theft (North Garo Hills): Liush Marak reported his scooter (ML-13A-6987) missing from Resubelpara on January 11th.
