Khliehriat, May 19 : A tragic road accident yesterday evening (18 May 2025) near Star Cement in the East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya spiraled into violent mob activity, resulting in damage to property and heightened security presence.
According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, police officers and staff from Lumshnong PS arrived at the spot and it was learned that, in the evening, a Road Traffic Accident (RTA) occurred near Wahiajer village, NH-06 involving, a Star Cement truck and a Pick-up truck. The Star Cement truck driven by a local, reportedly, fled the scene after the collision. The Pick-up truck, along with others pursued the cement truck upto the Star Cement premises.
Upon, arrival, the Pick-up driver who is also a local, climbed onto the Star Cement truck and assaulted the driver and in an attempt to flee or drive forward, the cement truck ran over the Pick-up driver, who died on the spot
Following the incident, approximately 300 people from nearby localities gathered at the Star Cement compound armed with traditional weapons. The agitated crowd reportedly started destroying the sentry posts, CCTV equipment, and attacked the Security Guard. The press release stated that the crowd blocked the removal of the deceased’s body, which was later managed and sent to Civil Hospital, Khliehriat.
The situation further escalated as the mob set 14-15 trucks ablaze in the parking area and other premises of Star Cement. Fire tenders were rushed to the scene, but the mob allegedly attacked the fire brigade personnel and attempted to damage the fire tender. Police personnel who were trying to control the situation and protect life and property were also attacked by the mob.
The arrival of additional police forces eventually brought the situation under control, and the mob dispersed. However, additional police forces remain stationed at Star Cement, and administrative officers are on high alert to prevent further violence.
Police have registered a case, and an investigation is currently underway into the sequence of events following the fatal road accident.
