Shillong, July 19 : The Meghalaya State Commission for Women has expressed profound shock, grief, and outrage following the repeated sexual assault and murder of a young girl in Williamnagar, Garo Hills. The Commission unequivocally condemned the “brutal crime,” calling it a “grievous violation of the basic rights, dignity, and safety of girls and women”.
In a press statement, the Commission conveyed its deep disturbance over the victim’s suffering and extended heartfelt condolences to her family. They emphasized that “such egregious acts of violence are intolerable and represent a direct attack on the values of humanity and justice that our society upholds”.
Call for Immediate Action and Suo Moto Cognizance
The Commission has demanded the immediate apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrator “through the strongest provisions of the law”. They have urged the Meghalaya Police and all concerned authorities to prioritize the investigation, ensure transparency, and provide regular public updates. Local communities, civil society, and concerned citizens are also encouraged to cooperate with investigative agencies to ensure swift justice.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women is taking suo moto cognizance of the case. As part of this, the Commission will:
- Independently monitor the progress of the investigation.
- Intervene if necessary to ensure the victim’s family receives all required support and assistance.
- Collaborate with government agencies to strengthen protective and preventive mechanisms for children and women in the region.
