Assaults, Thefts, Cyber Fraud Reported Across Meghalaya

Shillong, August 4 : A string of criminal incidents across various districts of Meghalaya, including assaults, thefts, and online fraud, has raised concerns among residents and law enforcement agencies. The latest report published on the official website of Meghalaya Police highlights key cases recorded between July 26 and August 2, 2025.

Assault and Robbery Near Nongstoiñ Bus Stand

On the evening of July 31, unidentified miscreants assaulted Francis Dkhar (38) near Nongstoiñ Bus Stand, Ïewduh, Shillong, and fled with his bag and a gold ring. The victim sustained injuries and was admitted to Civil Hospital, Shillong.

Series of Break-ins Reported in Shillong
  • On August 1, Abhijeet Kaushalyer reported a break-in at his Cleve Colony residence, where a TV, laptop, mobile phone, and other valuables were stolen.
  • Freddie Nelson Laloo filed a complaint regarding a July 26 burglary at his shop in Mawiong Umjapung Nongneng-3, Shillong, with grocery items worth ₹2,000 stolen.
  • Syorlin Lawai reported a similar theft on August 1 around 3:30 AM at her shop in Mawryngkneng (East Khasi Hills), with various goods looted.
Rise in Cyber Frauds in South West Khasi Hills

Two cybercrime complaints have been lodged:

  1. A female victim reported that on July 27, a man identified as ‘Sachin’ hacked her bank account and withdrew ₹50,000.
  2. Another woman fell prey to a Facebook scam on June 28, involving a fraudulent investment scheme advertised as ‘Meesho Mall’. She was tricked into sending ₹4.97 lakh through multiple transactions after being lured via WhatsApp by a woman named ‘Pragya Mishra’, who provided a QR code for payments.
Assault in Jowai

Two male residents from Jowai (West Jaintia Hills) were assaulted by two individuals at Dulong, Jowai on July 10 around 10:30 PM. The attackers also threatened them with dire consequences.

Livestock Theft Foiled in South West Garo Hills

On the evening of August 1, villagers in Jholgaon (SWGH) apprehended two suspected cattle thieves — Aminul Islam (19) and Shahinur Islam (18) — along with an auto-rickshaw (AS-17C-3382) used in the attempted theft. Police responded quickly and launched further investigation.

The Meghalaya Police continue to urge residents to stay vigilant, especially regarding online fraud and rural property theft. Authorities emphasize the importance of reporting suspicious activities promptly to aid in timely intervention and ensure public safety.
