Shillong, August 07 : The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) recently celebrated the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day with a series of events aimed at raising awareness about organ donation among its students and staff.
The celebrations kicked off on August 2, 2025, with a detailed presentation and discussion on kidney transplants led by Dr. Cornerstone Wann and his team during the Clinical Grand Rounds. This was followed by a poster competition on August 4, where more than 40 posters on the theme of organ donation were presented. To further promote the cause, a mini-marathon was held on August 5 within the NEIGRIHMS campus, attracting over 50 participants, including faculty members, students, staff, and their children.
The closing ceremony took place on August 5, 2025, with Director Prof (Dr.) Nalin Mehta distributing prizes to the winners. In his closing remarks, Prof Mehta congratulated the participants and announced that NEIGRIHMS has started the process of initiating cornea and kidney transplants to benefit patients in the region.
It is important to note that NEIGRIHMS serves as the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) for Meghalaya, with Dr. R Hajong, Professor in the Department of General Surgery, acting as the nodal officer.
