State Guest House Taraghar Inaugurated in Shillong

Shillong, September 16 : The Government of Meghalaya today inaugurated the newly constructed State Guest House, Taraghar, Shillong in a grand ceremony. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma graced the event as Chief Guest, calling the project a “milestone achievement” and a symbol of the government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s identity and infrastructure.

In his address, Sangma emphasized that since 2018, initiatives such as the adoption of the state emblem and anthem, along with key infrastructure projects like the guest house, have fostered pride and efficient governance. He noted Meghalaya’s record economic growth, ongoing investments in health and education, and development around Ward’s Lake, which complements the new facility.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong reflected on the absence of a state guest house for nearly 25 years, praising the government’s resolve to act despite criticism. He described the guest house as a “gift to the people of Meghalaya” and proposed showcasing it at the national level, including during visits by the Prime Minister.

Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, IAS, highlighted the guest house’s strategic role in hosting distinguished visitors, noting that it comprises 18 premium rooms, including executive and VIP suites. The facility is expected to enhance the state’s image and reduce costs previously incurred by accommodating guests in private hotels.

Earlier, C.V.D. Diengdoh, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, General Administration Department, extended a warm welcome and detailed the project’s journey. Construction began on September 14, 2022, replacing the old structure at a cost of ₹24.91 crore. Operations and maintenance have been entrusted to Hotel Polo Towers through an open bidding process to ensure world-class standards.

The inauguration of the State Guest House marks a significant step in enhancing Meghalaya’s hospitality infrastructure, ensuring that the State is well-prepared to host national and international dignitaries with dignity and pride.
