MLA Sohra underscores healthcare as the backbone of society and urges community participation

Shillong, September 24 : A Special Health Camp under the Swasth Nari, Sashakt ParivarAbhiyaan (SNSPA) was inaugurated at Swer Primary Health Centre, East Khasi Hills District, by Gavin M. Mylliem, MLA of Sohra Constituency yesterday. The programme was organised by the District Health Society, National Health Mission (NHM), East Khasi Hills, Shillong in collaboration with BPMU-NHM and Swer PHC. The camp was aimed at strengthening healthcare outreach, improving awareness on women and child health and ensuring access to specialist services at the grassroots level.

In his address, Gavin M. Mylliem appreciated the efforts of the District Health Society and partner organisations in bringing specialist health services closer to the rural population. He observed that healthcare formed the backbone of society and appreciated the fact that different departments and institutions were working together to ensure that quality services reaches the people, particularly women and children. He further urged the community to take active part in such initiatives and to make full use of the opportunities provided.

The health camp included awareness sessions on health and nutrition, specialist medical check-ups, counselling for women and adolescent girls, a blood donation drive, exhibitions of nutritious food items by Self-Help Groups and ICDS, quiz competitions for school students, baby show competitions, and enrolment of beneficiaries under MHIS-ABHA. The activities proved impactful in engaging the community and in promoting preventive healthcare, nutrition awareness, and access to government health schemes.

A special contribution was made by Nazareth Hospital, Shillong, which deputed specialist doctors for the camp, thereby enabling people in the area to avail themselves of expert consultation. The District Health Society expressed appreciation to the hospital for its cooperation and support in the successful conduct of the programme.

The programme was attended by Dr. E. Kharmutee, District Medical and Health Officer, W. Kharbuli, Block Development Officer of Laitkroh 12 Shnong, Dr. K. Kharnaior, Senior Specialist from Sohra CHC, Dr. R. Kyndiah, Senior Medical Officer and Block Medical Officer besides officials from the Health Department, ICDS, MSRLS, Education Department, Self-Help Groups ASHAs and Village Health Committee members.

The Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan under the National Health Mission is a flagship initiative focusing on holistic healthcare delivery for women, children and families. This campaign, by organising such camps in rural areas, aims at bridging gaps in healthcare accessibility and ensuring that quality services were brought closer to the people.
