CM Hands Over Cheques to 60 Tura Localities Under Beautification Project

Shillong, November 28 : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma handed over cheques to 60 localities of Tura as part of the ongoing Tura Beautification Project during a programme organised by the Tura Municipal Board at the District Auditorium on Friday.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the government, administration, municipal bodies, and citizens share a common vision of transforming Tura into a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful town. “The government cannot do it alone. We need your involvement and participation, sharing the responsibility for the larger interest of Tura and its residents,” he said.

The Chief Minister gave a detailed presentation on a series of upcoming projects for Tura, including additional Secretariat, Tura Super Market improvement project, P A Sangma Integrated Sports Complex, Tura, Tura Convention Centre, Pelga Tourism Circuit, Tura Youth and Cultural Centre which he informed is still at the conceptualisation stage, projects for improving water supply in Tura, installation and management of street lights and CCTVs etc among others. He highlighted in detail the costs, time frame of completion and main features of these projects.

Sangma also emphasised the urgent need to modernise public transportation and proposed introducing electric autos. “I am very keen on making public transportation green before the National Games 2027. I shall soon speak to the auto association about exchanging existing autos for electric ones,” he said, adding that the government would fund willing auto owners.

The Chief Minister announced plans for children’s parks and green open spaces for recreation, yoga, and exercise. “These spaces will strengthen bonds between children and senior citizens,” he said, inviting localities with available land to come forward. The government will fund and develop these parks before handing them over to communities for management.

Sangma urged residents to actively participate in the Paint My City Campaign, noting that collective responsibility is key to Tura’s transformation. “When we work together, we will see Tura become a beautiful, green, sustainable, and vibrant place,” he said.

The top three Best Performing Localities received cheques of ₹1 lakh each, while other participating localities were awarded ₹70,000. Senior officials from the district administration, Tura Municipal Board, and locality development committees attended the event.
