Shillong, December 12 : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday visited the Shillong Medical College at the old Pasteur Institute campus in Lawmali, where he interacted with the first batch of students enrolled at the institution. The visit marked a significant moment in the state’s medical education journey.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, along with senior officials from the Health Department and the medical college, were also present during the occasion.

Addressing the students and faculty, the Chief Minister expressed happiness at meeting the inaugural batch and described the Shillong Medical College as a crucial institution for the state of Meghalaya. He noted that while a formal inauguration by the Prime Minister is awaited, he did not wish to delay interacting with the faculty and students.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that the establishment of the medical college had been a challenging project for the state and lauded the efforts of former Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh and departmental officials. He said their passion and dedication were instrumental in giving shape to the institution.

While admitting that several challenges still remain, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the college and ensuring its smooth functioning. He also expressed gratitude to in-service doctors who have joined the institution, appreciating their expertise and guidance.

Describing the occasion as historic, Sangma told the students that they would be remembered as the first batch of Shillong Medical College. He said they would play a key role in setting academic and professional standards for future batches and urged them not to be discouraged by initial challenges.

“When a new institution begins, challenges are inevitable, but the government stands firmly with you,” he assured.

The visit concluded with an interactive session during which students and faculty shared their experiences and expectations with the Chief Minister.
