James PK Sangma elected President of Meghalaya Cricket Association to carry sports forward in Meghalaya

Shillong, December 21: The election to the new Apex Council of the Meghalaya Cricket Association was held on Friday where former cabinet minister of Meghalaya James PK Sangma was elected as the new President of the MCA.

Sangma will be supported by new Vice-President Rajiv Bareh, while Rayonald Kharkamni returns as Honorary Secretary. The Honorary Joint Secretary is Mebanphira Swer, Honorary Treasurer Eddystone Shylla and Apex Council Member Chuba R Marak.

The Apex Council thus maintains a wide representation from across Meghalaya.

The electoral process began with the notice for conduct of the general election on 19 November followed by publishing of the electoral roll on 27 November, with nominations filed on 1 December. All nominations were found to be valid, though one person withdrew their candidacy on 2 December.

“Honoured and humbled to be elected as President of the Apex Council of the Meghalaya Cricket Association,” Sangma said after the results were declared. “Grateful to all the affiliated district associations, office bearers, players, coaches and supporters who have vested their faith in me. This mandate is a responsibility to work tirelessly for transparent governance, better infrastructure and more opportunities for our young cricketers across Meghalaya. Looking forward to working closely with the MCA family, BCCI and all stakeholders to take Meghalaya cricket to the next level and make our State a strong and competitive force.”

The Electoral Officer, meanwhile, stated that the “whole election process was transparent, free and fair. It was conducted on the basis of the BCCI rules and procedure for conduct of elections and also with guidance and provisions of the rules of the Election Commission of India.”
