Shillong, January 13 : The East Khasi Hills Police have arrested a Home Guard volunteer after a video circulating on social media alleged that he threatened and extorted money from the occupants of a vehicle in the city.
According to officials, the incident took place on December 26, 2025, at around 9:35 a.m. when a white Maruti Suzuki 800 with Assam registration was travelling towards Happy Valley. The volunteer, identified as Reganson Kharlor (35) of the Madanrting Traffic Branch, was reportedly on clamping duty when he intercepted the vehicle near Happy Valley Bazar.
Police stated that Kharlor allegedly entered the vehicle, threatened its occupants—residents of Cachar district, Assam—and demanded ₹100,000. The group, who had visited Shillong during the Christmas holidays, was reportedly forced to proceed to the Madanrting Taxi Stand where ₹15,000 was collected after two victims withdrew cash from a nearby ATM.
The incident gained public attention after a video posted by a YouTuber went viral on January 12, 2026, prompting immediate inquiry from the district authorities.
A suo-motu case has been registered at Madanrting Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police confirmed that the volunteer has since been arrested, removed from all duties, and produced before the court.
Officials reported that CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed, and victims have been contacted to record official statements.
The East Khasi Hills District Police reiterated their commitment to public service and zero tolerance for extortion, abuse of authority, or high-handedness. The department also appealed for cooperation as investigations continue.
