Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive Growth in South Garo Hills

₹140 Cr sanctioned for Baghmara Water Supply Phase II; ₹4,000 Cr road project in final approval stage

Baghmara, January 21: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reaffirmed the Government’s strong commitment to inclusive and balanced development across all regions of Meghalaya, stating that South Garo Hills has witnessed renewed focus and sustained intervention under the present administration.

Addressing a gathering in Baghmara, the Chief Minister said that over the past seven to eight years, the district has seen major improvements across key sectors, with the Government working to bridge long-standing infrastructure gaps and improve essential services.

He recalled that for over two decades, South Garo Hills functioned without a dedicated Deputy Commissioner’s office, forcing the administration to operate from a sub-divisional building. “For 23 years, the district had no DC office of its own — a clear reflection of neglect in the past,” the Chief Minister stated. “Our Government has taken decisive steps to change that, and construction of the new DC office is now underway.” He also acknowledged that staff quarters remain a challenge but assured that steps are being taken to resolve this crucial issue.

Highlighting the Government’s focus on education, the Chief Minister pointed out the poor condition of the Captain Williamson Sangma College, which is now being upgraded with the construction of a new building. He said this reflects the administration’s commitment to improving higher education infrastructure across the state.

In a major announcement, Chief Minister Sangma declared that Phase II of the Baghmara Water Supply Project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹140 crore. “Although there were delays in securing approval, I am happy to share that the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has now sanctioned the funds,” he said. The project aims to provide safe and reliable drinking water to residents of Baghmara and nearby areas.

On the connectivity front, the Chief Minister revealed that the Darugre–Baghmara–Siju–Dalu Road Project, estimated at ₹4,000 crore, has reached its final stage of approval. “Land acquisition has been completed, and the proposal is currently with the Ministry of Finance for clearance,” he said, adding that the project will transform regional connectivity and economic prospects in South Garo Hills.

The Chief Minister underscored that development is a continuous process, stating, “Transformation cannot happen overnight. But through steady, focused, and inclusive governance, we are reversing decades of neglect.”

He added that the series of initiatives — from improved healthcare and education to better connectivity and water infrastructure — demonstrate the Government’s clear intent, vision, and commitment to ensuring equitable growth and enhanced quality of life for every citizen of Meghalaya, particularly those in the southernmost districts.
