Arms, Ammunition and Explosives Recovered in East Garo Hills

Williamnagar, January 26 : In a major breakthrough, the East Garo Hills Police recovered a large cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives during a special operation conducted in the early hours of January 25, 2026. The operation was carried out by a team comprising the Superintendent of Police, Additional Superintendent of Police, officers, and SOT personnel of the East Garo Hills DEF, Williamnagar.

Acting on credible intelligence, the police launched the operation around 1:00 AM in a thick forest area near Dura Bawegra village. The team discovered a significant stockpile of weapons and explosives buried underground—believed to have been concealed by members of former militant outfits, including the GNLA (Garo National Liberation Army) and ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom).

The seized items included:

  • 1 AK-56 rifle with 1 magazine
  • 3 pistols with 2 magazines
  • 1 double-barrel country-made rifle with an improvised trigger mechanism
  • 7 delay mechanisms for explosive devices
  • 99 rounds of AK 7.62 live ammunition
  • 4 rounds of 7.65 mm live ammunition
  • 50 live electric detonators
  • 11 shotgun cartridges
  • 1 improvised explosive device (IED) fitted with a digital timer and concealed inside a 3-litre pressure cooker, which was safely defused by the East Garo Hills District Police Bomb Squad

A case has been registered under Williamnagar PS Case No. 04/2026 under Sections 25(1A)(1B) of the Arms Act and Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act. Police have initiated an investigation to trace the origins of the recovered items and identify any possible links with former or active insurgent groups.
