Jowai Court Sentences Man to Life Imprisonment for Burning Wife to Death

Jowai, February 4 : A local court in Jowai has convicted a man and sentenced him to life imprisonment for killing his wife by setting her on fire nearly two decades ago. The judgment was delivered by the Sessions Judge, Jowai, N.A. Khan, in Sessions Case No. 37 of 2015, according to an official statement from the Office of the Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills .

The convict, identified as Stam Surong, was found guilty of murdering his wife, Before Sari, at their residence in Mukhla Nongrim village on the morning of September 8, 2006. The prosecution stated that Surong poured kerosene oil on the victim and set her ablaze around 5:00 a.m. .

The case was initiated following a First Information Report lodged by Barwill Singh Sari at the Ummulong Beat House on the same day. Before succumbing to her injuries, the victim disclosed details of the incident to her family members, which became a crucial part of the investigation .

Police registered the matter as Jowai P.S. Case No. 104(9)06 under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. After a detailed investigation led by Sub-Inspector A. Rymbai, a charge sheet was filed against the accused .

Following a full trial, the court held Surong guilty of the offence punishable under Section 302 IPC. In addition to life imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on the convict .
