BJP Meghalaya calls for crackdown on illegal mining after East Jaintia Hills tragedy

Shillong, February 6: The BJP Meghalaya Pradesh has expressed deep sorrow over the recent mining accident in East Jaintia Hills that claimed several lives, while urging the state government to take stringent action against illegal mining activities across the state.

In a statement issued by Chief Spokesperson Maraiahom Kharkrang, the party conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased labourers and termed the incident a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by illegal and unscientific mining practices.

The party also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh to the families of the victims, describing the move as a prompt response to support those affected by the tragedy.

According to the BJP Meghalaya, the accident has once again highlighted the long-standing issue of illegal mining in the state, which it described as a disaster waiting to happen. While noting that a mine owner has been arrested following an order from the High Court, the party stated that stronger and more comprehensive action is required.

The BJP Meghalaya urged the state government to launch an immediate crackdown on all forms of illegal mining and ensure strict legal action against individuals involved in such operations. The party stressed that illegal mining benefits only a few while putting the lives of many at risk.

Calling for decisive steps to eliminate illegal mining, the party stated that both the government and society must no longer ignore the dangers posed by such activities and ensure the safety and welfare of workers and communities in mining areas.
