Khliehriat, February 7 : The District Magistrate of East Jaintia Hills has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the Thangsko area following the deadly explosion at an illegal coal mine that claimed multiple lives on February 5.
The order, issued on Saturday by District Magistrate Manish Kumar, IAS, prohibits the assembly of more than five persons in and around illegal mining sites and operational areas at Thangsko, except for officials engaged in lawful government duties.
Authorities cited the recent blast at Mynsyngat, credible complaints of continuing illegal mining, and the likelihood of obstruction to enforcement actions as reasons for the restrictions. The Meghalaya High Court has also taken judicial notice of repeated explosions in illegal mines and directed strict action against those involved.
Under the order, all magistrates deployed in the area have been directed to maintain strict vigilance, conduct inspections and seize vehicles, machinery and tools used in illegal mining. Legal proceedings will be initiated under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and other relevant laws.
Police and magistrates have been instructed to identify and arrest mine owners, operators, financiers and all individuals involved in unlawful extraction, besides securing incriminating materials connected with such activities.
Officials warned that any violation of the order would attract penal action. The directive has come into force with immediate effect and will remain valid until further orders.
