Farmers Connect Directly With Buyers From Over 90 Countries
Shillong, February 14 : Meghalaya showcased its growing organic agriculture sector on the international stage by participating for the first time in BIOFACH 2026, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food and agriculture held in Nuremberg, Germany.
The event brought together participants from more than 90 countries, providing the state a strategic platform to present its organic ecosystem, certification systems and export-oriented value chains. The state delegation was led by Dr. Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya and Chairman of the Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture (MEGNOLIA).
During the presentation, the delegation highlighted Meghalaya’s community-driven organic farming model focusing on sustainability, certification and market integration. Discussions were also held with international buyers, certification agencies and organic traders to explore procurement partnerships and long-term collaborations.
A key highlight of the event was the participation of grassroots farmers from Meghalaya. Turmeric farmer Trinity Saioo from Jaintia Hills described the experience as a “dream come true,” stating it helped her understand the importance of certification and value addition for better markets. Similarly, black pepper farmer Ringnang Kongkal Sangma from Garo Hills said interactions with global buyers improved understanding of traceability and collective marketing practices. Officials said farmer participation aims to connect producers directly with international markets and improve awareness of global quality standards.
The initiative forms part of the State Organic Mission 2028, which aims to bring one lakh hectares under certified organic farming through cluster-based certification, Farmer Producer Organisations and improved market access. The state is also promoting a collective organic brand to ensure better price realisation for farmers.
Meghalaya displayed certified organic turmeric, ginger and sticky rice at a dedicated pavilion. Pineapple products such as concentrate, puree and freeze-dried variants were also showcased through partner organisations, highlighting a shift from raw produce to export-ready value-added goods.
Officials said the participation marks a major step toward integrating Meghalaya’s organic producers into global supply chains while strengthening sustainable farming practices.
The Government of Meghalaya stated it remains committed to building a farmer-centric organic ecosystem and positioning the state as a reliable global source of high-quality organic products.
