HNLC Cadre Suspected in Them Mator IED Blast Surrenders; Two Others Arrested

Shillong, February 27 : The Asst. Inspector General of Police (A) has informed that an active cadre of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Mairang on February 25, 2026.

The surrendered cadre has been identified as Samuel Wahlang Pahsyntiew @ Samuel Wahlang, a resident of Umpohwin, Mawlasnai Outpost, Ri-Bhoi District. He surrendered in the presence of his family members, village authorities, and senior officers of the Meghalaya Police.

According to official sources, he is suspected to be involved in the IED blast that occurred near the Syndicate Bus Stand, close to Them Mator (Harijan Colony), Iewmawlong, Shillong, on March 9, 2024, along with several similar incidents in recent years.

During examination, the surrendered cadre reportedly revealed that he, along with some Bangladesh-based HNLC members, had been attempting to lure young people into joining the unlawful association over the past two years.

Based on further information, a case vide CBPS (ER) Case No. 01(02)2026 under sections 3(5)/61(2)/113(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)/147/148/308(1)(3)(4)/351(2) BNS has been registered. Two other cadres suspected of involvement in recruitment activities and in planting an IED at Umsning market on October 12, 2025 — which was later recovered and safely defused — have been arrested from Umsning.

Police officials stated that investigation is ongoing and further necessary action will be taken accordingly. Authorities also informed that action is being taken in accordance with the law and the surrender policy of the State Government.
