Shillong, February 27 : The 4th Edition of the Assam Rifles Sentinels Cup Football Tournament (Men & Women) 2026 concluded successfully on February 27, marking another milestone in Assam Rifles’ continued efforts to promote sports and youth engagement in the North East.
The tournament was held from February 17 to 27 at multiple venues across Shillong and witnessed enthusiastic participation along with overwhelming support from football enthusiasts across the region.
Building on the legacy of its previous editions, the Sentinels Cup once again established itself as a premier football platform, showcasing high-quality football, competitive spirit and exemplary sportsmanship that highlighted the North East’s rich football culture.
Teams from various football clubs of Meghalaya, along with teams from Assam Rifles, Indian Army and Meghalaya Police, competed fiercely. The championship followed a structured format comprising group stages and knockout rounds, culminating in thrilling finals in both Men’s and Women’s categories.
In the Men’s category, Smit SC emerged victorious after a closely contested final against Assam Rifles FT, displaying exceptional skill and teamwork. In the Women’s category, Assam Rifles FT clinched the title with an impressive performance against Laitkor SC, earning appreciation for their determination and discipline.
The winners in both categories received a cash prize of ₹3 lakh each along with the prestigious Assam Rifles Sentinels Cup Trophy. The runners-up were awarded ₹2 lakh each.
The grand finale and closing ceremony were graced by Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General, Assam Rifles, as the Chief Guest. Senior officers of Assam Rifles, civil dignitaries, sports officials and a large number of spectators were present, adding prestige to the event.
The Sentinels Cup reflects Assam Rifles’ commitment as the “Friends of the North East,” using sports as a tool to motivate youth to stay away from insurgency and drug abuse while encouraging positive pursuits.
Through its MoU with the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Academy and its Assam Rifles Public School (Sports), the force continues to identify and nurture football talent from the region. The tournament aligns with national initiatives such as the Khelo India Abhiyan and the Fit India Movement, reinforcing the role of sports in nation-building.
More than a sporting event, the Sentinels Cup stood as a celebration of unity, discipline and the spirit of the North East. The fourth edition brought together communities, players and institutions, leaving behind memories of inspiring performances.
The successful conduct of the tournament was made possible with the support of NEEPCO, the sponsor of the event, whose commitment to youth empowerment and sports development played a key role. The organisers also acknowledged Hill Myna Magazine as the magazine partner for this edition.
