Tura, March 17: The West Garo Hills District Police detained several individuals and seized a cache of suspected weapons during routine naka checking at Aramile on Monday.
According to a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police, the police team intercepted a number of vehicles carrying several persons during the operation. Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicles, the police recovered various lethal weapons including machetes, hammers, catapults and other items suspected to be intended for use amid the ongoing communal tensions in the district.
The recovered weapons have been confiscated, and all individuals found in the vehicles were detained for interrogation.
During questioning, the detainees reportedly stated that they were heading towards the plain belt area after being instigated by an Achik NGO group. Police are currently examining the matter further to determine the possible motive and whether a larger conspiracy is involved.
Meanwhile, the district police have intensified security measures across West Garo Hills. Naka checking has been strengthened at vulnerable points to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order.
The police have also appealed to the public to cooperate with authorities and report any suspicious activities that could disturb peace in the district.
