NAD Demands Immediate Release of Garo NGO Leaders, Raises Concerns Over Arrests

Tura, March 19 : The Nangrimgimin A’chik Dol (NAD) has demanded the immediate release of detained Garo NGO leaders, expressing serious concern over the recent arrests of prominent indigenous figures, including Balkarin Ch. Marak, Acting Chairman of GSMC and Vice President of NAD, and Johnny A. Marak, an A’chik leader.

In a formal statement issued on Wednesday, the organization described the arrests as a violation of the fundamental rights of the Garo people, who were reportedly protesting to safeguard the constitutional provisions of the Sixth Schedule.

The NAD stated that the protests were rooted in Article 244(2), which ensures protection of tribal land, customs, and self-governance. The organization reiterated that the primary issue behind the agitation is the protection of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election process, particularly concerns over participation by non-tribal individuals.

The group has put forward key demands, including the immediate release of all detained NGO leaders and citizensinvolved in the recent protests.

NAD Secretary L.K. Sangma emphasized that citizens have the constitutional right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly under Article 19(1)(a) and (b).

“These leaders did not act for personal gain; they stood for the rights of the indigenous people. We urge the government to handle this matter with wisdom and restraint. Governments may change, but the identity and constitutional rights of the Garo people remain constant,” Sangma stated.

The organization also raised concerns over the lack of transparency regarding the whereabouts of those detained, urging authorities to allow family members immediate access to the detainees.

NAD warned that continued uncertainty could heighten fear and distress within the community, and called on the government to act responsibly while upholding constitutional values and maintaining public trust.
