Tura, March 19 : In a significant initiative to restore peace and harmony, a delegation comprising members of the Tura-based Church Leaders Forum, Mothers’ Union, and the Garo Baptist Convention (ABDK) visited the Gimegre relief camp under Dadenggre Block in West Garo Hills on Wednesday.
The relief camp is currently sheltering around 1,500 displaced persons, highlighting the scale of the ongoing humanitarian situation in the area. The delegation departed from the Chandmari Krima Office under police escort following a prayer led by Rev. Frithing D. Sangma. En route, they were received at Sadolpara Baptist Church.
At the camp, the team interacted with displaced residents, listened to their grievances, and extended support. Relief materials were also handed over to the concerned authorities to ensure proper and systematic distribution.
Subsequently, a peace meeting was held at Shyamnagar, attended by approximately 75 participants, including community leaders, members of the Mothers’ Union, Gaonburas from the Muslim community, and local officials. The meeting was led by ADC Pittingson R. Sangma and BDO of Demdema Block, Dr. Rikrak N. Marak.
Speakers underscored that peace remains the top priority, urging communities to reject rumours and misinformation that could escalate tensions. Participants called for forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity, and resolved to organise similar peace meetings in other areas with active community involvement.
The gathering also stressed the importance of respecting the rights and aspirations of indigenous communities, while upholding justice as a key pillar for achieving lasting peace. The programme began and concluded with prayers, reflecting a collective commitment to harmony. The visit concluded with a renewed resolve among stakeholders to promote peace and translate dialogue into sustained grassroots action across the region.
