Shillong, March 21 : The third edition of Meghalaya’s Monthly Farmers’ Market was held in Shillong on Saturday, showcasing fresh seasonal produce with a special focus on strawberries, bananas, and sesame seeds. Organised by 1917 iTEAMS under the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and supported by the Meghalaya Farmers’ (Empowerment) Commission (MFEC), the market took place at the Directorate of Fisheries parking lot near St. Edmund’s College, Risa Colony. The initiative aims to strengthen farmers’ livelihoods by creating a direct link between rural producers and urban consumers, ensuring fair prices while eliminating intermediaries.
Farmers and self-help groups from across the state participated, bringing a variety of locally grown organic produce. Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to directly sell their products. A strawberry farmer from Pynroishaphrang SHG described the event as a “blessing,” highlighting the chance to reach buyers and improve income prospects. Organizations such as Bethany Society also showcased inclusive agricultural practices, promoting products cultivated by women, persons with disabilities, and rural communities.
The event saw participation from SOMOI, a local hyperlocal e-commerce platform, which helped expand market access by procuring produce directly from farmers. According to the platform’s founder, there has been a steady rise in sales and online orders, reflecting growing demand and improved revenue opportunities for farmers.
The market also featured a live kitchen managed by members of Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs), offering dishes made from the focus crops. Visitors enjoyed local cuisine alongside live performances by artists from the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project.
Officials stated that the recurring marketplace is a key step toward building a transparent and self-sustaining agricultural ecosystem in Meghalaya. By institutionalizing such farmer-consumer engagements, the state aims to ensure financial independence for growers while promoting long-term agricultural growth and sustainability.
