MEGHALAYA SEEKS 50–60% HIKE IN LPG SUPPLY FROM CENTRE

Shillong, March 26 : Meghalaya has urged the Centre to increase the supply of LPG by 50–60 percent, citing growing demand driven by the state’s tourism sector and current supply constraints. Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister Methodius Dkhar informed that he has written to the Union government requesting a revision of the existing cap on LPG supply to the state.

The Minister clarified that while domestic LPG supply remains stable, there is a noticeable gap in the availability of commercial cylinders. He stated that against a requirement of 100 cylinders, only about 80 percent is currently being supplied, resulting in a shortfall affecting businesses.

Dkhar highlighted that Meghalaya’s tourism-driven economy has increased demand for LPG, particularly in hotels and restaurants, making it necessary for the Centre to reconsider the existing supply cap.

The state government has requested the Centre to raise LPG supply from the current levels to between 50 and 60 percent higher, to meet demand and avoid disruptions in commercial activities.

The Minister assured that strict monitoring is being carried out to prevent hoarding and black-marketing. Committees led by the Chief Secretary and district administrations are overseeing supply and distribution.

While acknowledging that hotels and restaurants are still facing some shortages, Dkhar noted that the situation has improved compared to the past few weeks, with steps already taken to enhance supply.

The state government remains hopeful that the Centre will respond positively to its request, ensuring adequate LPG availability for both domestic and commercial use in Meghalaya.
