Shillong, March 27 : Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma attended the closing ceremony of College Week 2026 and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Synod College at Jaiaw, Shillong, lauding the institution’s legacy and contribution to society.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the college has grown “from strength to strength,” shaping generations of youth with strong values and contributing significantly to society beyond academics.
Highlighting the importance of education, he stated that investing in human capital is the most powerful way to transform society and drive the state forward. He also noted ongoing reforms based on recommendations of the Education Reforms Commission.
The Chief Minister informed that the state government spends nearly ₹1,200 crore annually on education, supporting over 4,500 institutions, including funding for teachers’ salaries under the deficit grant system.
Emphasising Meghalaya’s demographic advantage, he noted that nearly 50% of the population is below 20 years. However, he also expressed concern over issues like drug abuse and rising HIV cases, urging collective efforts to address these challenges.
The Chief Minister encouraged youth to embrace entrepreneurship, noting that while around 60,000 youths enter the workforce annually, only a small fraction secure government jobs. He urged institutions to promote innovation and skill development.
Synod College, established in 1965 with just 43 students, has grown into a major institution with over 3,000 students and multiple academic programmes. It recently secured an A+ grade in NAAC accreditation.
The event included the release of a college souvenir, cultural performances, and announcement of College Week winners, marking the culmination of the celebrations themed “Grace, Growth and Gratitude.”
The Diamond Jubilee celebrations highlighted Synod College’s journey of six decades, reflecting its commitment to academic excellence, values, and holistic development of students.
