Shillong, March 28, 2026: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the sesquicentennial (150 years) celebrations of Lawjynriew Dorbar Shnong at Lawjynriew Football Ground, Nongthymmai, in the presence of senior leaders and community members.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister congratulated the residents of Lawjynriew, describing the occasion as historic and momentous. He praised the traditional Khasi welcome, cultural performances, and community spirit, stating that the shnong reflects the rich heritage and unity of the Khasi people.
Highlighting its legacy, the Chief Minister said Lawjynriew’s history is closely tied to the growth of Shillong and the state. He noted that from its early governance under Hima Mylliem to its formal land registration in 1876, the shnong has evolved into a vibrant and cosmopolitan locality while preserving its identity.
The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of traditional institutions, stating that the Dorbar Shnong system remains a strong pillar of grassroots governance. He commended the Rangbah Shnong and members for maintaining harmony, preserving traditions, and ensuring community participation.
Reaffirming the government’s support for community-led development, the Chief Minister announced ₹30 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund for the needs of the locality.
During the programme, the Chief Minister unveiled several initiatives, including Installation of CCTV systems, Setting up of location signages across the locality and Launch of the shnong’s official website and dashboard. He also felicitated prominent leaders and elders of the community.
The Chief Minister urged residents to continue supporting government initiatives and work together for the overall development of the locality. The celebration marked 150 years of Lawjynriew Dorbar Shnong, highlighting its legacy as a symbol of harmony, progress, and cultural pride in Meghalaya.
