Shillong, April 2: Team Meghalaya delivered an impressive performance at the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 held in Chhattisgarh, securing a total of eight medals, including two gold and six bronze.
According to a press release issued by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, the state currently stands 12th in the overall medal tally, with two more archery events scheduled.
The state government has accelerated preparations for the 39th National Games, to be hosted in Meghalaya in 2027. As part of this effort, ₹40 crore has been sanctioned in Phase I to 27 State Sports Associations to strengthen athlete training and team preparation. Around 2,000 athletes are currently undergoing structured training across the state, supported by improved infrastructure, newly recruited coaches, and better access to equipment.
Meghalaya’s archery team brought laurels to the state by winning two gold medals in the compound category. The women’s team comprised Nakibansharai Khonghat, Kate Diamond Lyngdoh, and Stracy M. Sangma, while the men’s team included Donkupar L. Shadap, Phrangkupar Kharjahrin, and Banwanbor Marwein.
The state also secured six bronze medals across multiple disciplines. In athletics, Bethlyne G. Makri won bronze in the 10,000m race walking event, Balarisha Thyrniang in the 10,000m run, and Melibad Kro in shot put. In swimming, Verem Gedaliah Nongsiej secured bronze in the 50m freestyle event. Larityngkai Lawriniang won bronze in wrestling, while Juh Pa U Juh Nongtdu clinched bronze in weightlifting.
The Department congratulated all medal winners, coaches, and sports associations for their outstanding performance and reiterated its commitment to building a strong sporting ecosystem for the youth of Meghalaya.
