CM Conrad Sangma Inaugurates Nabon Memorial Home in Shillong

Shillong, April 11: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday inaugurated the Nabon Memorial Home at Mawiong Rim, Shillong, an initiative of the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri Lum Presbytery aimed at supporting elderly and vulnerable women.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the home, named after the first Christian lady among the Khasis, carries deep significance as it reflects not only the acceptance of Christianity but also the values of service, compassion and support for the needy.

He informed that the state government is working towards establishing homes for the elderly across different parts of Meghalaya, focusing on the concept of active and happy ageing. He expressed interest in collaborating with institutions like Nabon Memorial Home to strengthen support systems for senior citizens.

Highlighting the role of anganwadi centres, the Chief Minister said they can play an important part in linking children with the elderly, creating meaningful inter-generational engagement. He noted that such interaction would help children learn respect and values, while also providing emotional connection and support for senior citizens.

He added that these centres could evolve into vibrant inter-generational spaces where both children and elders can interact, fostering a more caring and inclusive society.

The Chief Minister also observed that tribal communities traditionally cared for their elders, but modernisation and urbanisation have led to a gradual shift away from this practice. He stressed the need for collective efforts from society, the church and the government to address this concern.

Praising the Jingiaseng Kynthei for their dedication and service, he expressed hope that the Nabon Memorial Home would serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the importance of honouring and caring for elders.

The home is designed to support women who are widowed, abandoned or destitute, providing them with a safe, secure and compassionate environment where they can live with dignity.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister also announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund for the Nabon Memorial Home.
