Mawlieh Stretch of Shillong–Dawki Road Closed After Rockslide; Two Dead

Shillong, April 21 : Authorities have ordered the continued closure of a key stretch of the Shillong–Dawki road near Mawlieh following a rockslide that claimed two lives and rendered the route unsafe for vehicular movement.

According to an order issued by the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Pynursla Civil Sub-Division, the incident occurred on April 20 along the Mawlieh stretch of NH-206. The rockslide not only resulted in fatalities but also posed serious risks to commuters due to unstable hill conditions and ongoing excavation activities.

The affected stretch—from Laitlyngkot to Mawlieh—has been declared unsafe and will remain closed to all traffic until a thorough safety inspection is carried out and the road is certified fit for public use.

Earlier, a public notice had already announced the closure of the road on April 20 and 21 following repeated incidents of rockfalls despite continuous clearance efforts. Fresh rockslides have continued to occur, raising concerns over commuter safety.

Authorities have directed officials to erect barricades, install warning signages, and deploy personnel to regulate traffic and prevent entry into the affected zone. The Police Department, NHIDCL, contractors, and PWD (Roads) have been instructed to strictly enforce the order.

The public has been advised to avoid the route and use alternative roads until further notice, as the situation remains hazardous.
