Section 163 BNSS Imposed to Ban Illegal Sand Mining Along Wahniangleng River in EKH

Shillong, April 24 : The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), banning illegal sand mining and quarrying activities across the district with immediate effect.

According to the official order, authorities have taken note of ongoing removal of sand from the riverbeds of the Wahniangleng River near Myllem, which has reportedly caused significant damage to water sources in surrounding areas.

The order also refers to directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which prohibit any mining or extraction activities without valid licenses, permits, and environmental clearances as mandated under existing laws and the EIA Notification, 2006.

Officials stated that unchecked extraction of sand and minerals has led to environmental degradation, including destruction of vegetation, damage to water sources, and harm to aquatic life, rendering water unfit for drinking purposes.

To prevent further environmental damage and safeguard public health and safety, the administration has strictly prohibited:

  • Illegal mining and quarrying on hill slopes
  • Removal of sand from riverbeds without proper authorization

The order has been issued on an urgent basis and will remain in force across East Khasi Hills district until further notice.

Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against violators as per the law.
