Shillong, April 29: In a shocking incident that has stirred widespread concern, a group of schoolchildren rescued a newborn baby believed to have been buried alive at Laiphewdiengngan village in the Mawhati area of Ri Bhoi district.
According to reports, the incident occurred on April 27, 2026, and came to light after visuals of the rescue surfaced on social media, drawing strong reactions from the public.
Sources said the alert schoolchildren discovered the infant buried under the soil and immediately acted to save the baby. They rushed the newborn to Mawhati Primary Health Centre (PHC) for urgent medical attention. From there, the infant was referred to Civil Hospital for further treatment.
Hospital sources informed that the baby is currently under the care of doctors and is receiving necessary medical support.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the parents remains unknown. Police in Ri Bhoi have launched a detailed investigation into the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the case and to trace those responsible.
