Shillong, May 9: The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority on Friday organised the National Lok Adalat in the High Court of Meghalaya and across all districts of the state under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
The programme was conducted under the patronage and guidance of Justice Revati Mohite Dere, Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya and Patron-in-Chief of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority. The initiative was supervised by Justice H. S. Thangkhiew, Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya and Executive Chairman of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, along with Justice W. Diengdoh, Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya and Chairperson of the High Court Legal Services Committee.
According to a statement issued by Member Secretary E. Kharumnuid, a total of 625 cases were taken up during the National Lok Adalat, including 242 pre-litigation cases and 383 pending cases.
Out of the total cases taken up, 183 cases were successfully settled, involving a settlement amount of Rs. 1,34,86,214/- (Rupees one crore thirty-four lakhs eighty-six thousand two hundred fourteen) only.
The National Lok Adalat aims to provide speedy and amicable settlement of disputes through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, thereby reducing the burden on courts and ensuring access to justice for all sections of society.
