Shillong, May 15: Local ice cream brand “Taste of Shillong” on Thursday inaugurated its first retail outlet at Dreamland Arcade in Police Bazaar, marking a major milestone in its entrepreneurial journey.
Founded by entrepreneur Sushmi Mazumdar, the brand began after she faced difficulties in meeting customer demand while operating a retail ice cream business due to limited supply. The experience reportedly inspired her to start producing homemade ice cream using kitchen gadgets available at home, eventually leading to the creation of “Taste of Shillong.”
The inauguration programme was attended by Saloni Verma, who formally inaugurated the outlet by cutting the ribbon. The event also featured a welcome address by Luziana Wahlang. Speaking during the programme, founder Sushmi Mazumdar reflected on her entrepreneurial journey and acknowledged the support received from fellow entrepreneurs and the PRIME Meghalaya team.
Saloni Verma congratulated the entrepreneurs on the successful launch and recalled her first experience tasting the brand’s “Bee Mee” ice cream during local events and pop-up stores. She also appreciated the continued support and mentorship provided by PRIME Meghalaya.
Co-founder Mishmi Mazumdar delivered the vote of thanks and acknowledged the support of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency and PRIME Meghalaya. According to the founders, the company aims to expand outlets across all districts of Meghalaya, especially tourist destinations, while promoting innovative local flavours unique to the state.
Taste of Shillong is known for producing preservative-free homemade ice creams using local fruits and ingredients found in Meghalaya. The brand has developed more than 25 flavours, including Khasi Rice Ice Cream, Sohiong Ice Cream and Star Fruit Ice Cream.
