HSPDP Youth Wing Proposes Monument for Late Hopingstone Lyngdoh in Nongstoin

Nongstoin, June 6: The Youth Wing of the Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), West Khasi Hills District, has submitted a proposal to the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills seeking the construction of a full-fledged monument or statue in honour of late Hopingstone Lyngdoh, one of Meghalaya’s most respected political leaders and a prominent figure in the Statehood Movement.

In a memorandum submitted to the district administration, the HSPDP Youth Wing stated that the proposed monument would serve as a lasting tribute to the immense contributions made by the late leader towards the welfare of the people of Meghalaya, particularly those of Nongstoin Constituency.

The proposal highlighted Hopingstone Lyngdoh’s long and distinguished public career, during which he served as Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Member of District Council (MDC) for 27 years, MLA for 43 years, Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and Member of Parliament representing the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency.

According to the Youth Wing, Lyngdoh played a pivotal role in advancing the aspirations of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo people and remained a champion of democratic values and social justice throughout his political life.

The organisation stated that the proposed monument would aim to preserve his legacy, inspire future generations through his exemplary leadership, create a landmark of historical and cultural significance in Nongstoin, and promote awareness about Meghalaya’s political history.

Among the features proposed are a life-size bronze statue of the late leader, a granite pedestal engraved with details of his life and achievements, landscaped surroundings with seating facilities and lighting, commemorative plaques highlighting his role in the Statehood Movement, and arrangements for annual observances and floral tributes.

The Youth Wing suggested several possible locations for the monument, including Nongstoin Children’s Park, areas near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Complex, Ladweitang Public Square, Upper New Nongstoin Junction, Sohpian Junction on NH-44E, or any other suitable public location identified by the district administration.

The HSPDP Youth Wing has urged the district administration to initiate consultations with the Government of Meghalaya, concerned departments, local authorities and stakeholders to facilitate the establishment of the memorial.
