Shillong, July 7: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Tuesday met Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein to apprise him of the union’s 20-point charter of demands, with particular emphasis on the contentious uranium mining issue affecting Domiasiat and neighbouring villages under the Ranikor constituency.
In a press statement, the KSU said it held a detailed discussion with Marwein on the uranium issue, which has once again come into focus in recent days as Domiasiat and nearby villages possessing uranium deposits fall within his constituency.
The union expressed concern over the reported purchase of land by affluent individuals in the uranium-bearing areas and highlighted the lack of basic infrastructure and development in the region. It pointed out that essential facilities such as healthcare services, schools, drinking water supply and other public amenities have long been neglected by the government.
The KSU also raised alarm over the frequent visits by officials of the Atomic Mineral Department (AMD) and alleged middlemen, accusing them of attempting to acquire land and misleading local residents into permitting uranium mining. The union further alleged that people opposing uranium extraction were being subjected to intimidation and pressure.
Reiterating its opposition to uranium mining in the state, the KSU urged the MLA to support the adoption of a resolution during the upcoming Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly opposing the Government of India’s proposed uranium mining project.
The union also called for measures to prevent the sale and purchase of land in uranium-rich areas for the benefit of mining companies, including the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), in a bid to safeguard the interests of local communities.
