Shillong, July 22: The United Democratic Party (UDP) State Youth Wing has strongly condemned a social media statement allegedly made by Meghalaya Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) president Mewaker Lyngdoh Pakma concerning protesters.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the UDP youth wing said Pakma had used the words, “Shoot them! Tear gas are not enough!”, along with the hashtag #UAPA_Sedition, while referring to the protesters. Terming the remarks “irresponsible, deeply disturbing and unbecoming of a public leader”, the organisation said public representatives must exercise restraint and responsibility in both their words and actions.
The UDP State Youth Wing demanded that Pakma withdraw the statement and issue an unconditional public apology. It also urged political leaders and the authorities concerned to uphold the dignity of public office, exercise maximum restraint and protect democratic rights through peaceful and constructive dialogue.
The organisation also condemned the alleged use of force by police against a student during the protest. It maintained that peaceful protest and freedom of expression are fundamental pillars of democracy. “Any statement that appears to advocate or justify violence against citizens exercising their democratic rights, or the excessive use of force against peaceful protesters, is unacceptable,” the youth wing said.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding democratic principles, protecting citizens’ rights and working towards a peaceful, united and progressive Meghalaya.
