Shillong, July 26: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Meghalaya, on Sunday recovered the body of a missing person from the Wahniangleng River near Phra Mer, Mylliem, bringing to an end a four-day search and recovery operation.
According to a press release issued by the Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards, the search operation was launched on July 22 after authorities received information about the disappearance of a resident of Phra Mer, Mylliem.
During the operation, SDRF personnel, in coordination with Mawngap Police and local residents of Laitkroh and Phra Mer, carried out extensive searches in the gorges and along the Wahniangleng River. Search teams also deployed a Rubber Inflatable Boat (RIB) to cover the river stretch from Mawphlang Dam.
On July 23 and 24, SDRF teams conducted intensive searches upstream and downstream of the Wahniangleng River using the RIB. However, no trace of the missing person was found.
On July 25, local residents spotted the body trapped in a confined section of the river. SDRF personnel immediately attempted a recovery operation, but it had to be suspended due to strong water currents and hazardous conditions.
The operation resumed early on July 26, and at approximately 7:10 a.m., the SDRF team successfully retrieved the body. The deceased was subsequently handed over to the Mawngap Police for completion of the necessary legal formalities.
The SDRF thanked the local community and all agencies involved for their cooperation throughout the search and recovery operation.
