Shillong, July 27: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Monday approved a series of key decisions, including the State’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026, funding for a major power transmission project, and the creation of the New Shillong Development Authority (NSDA), aimed at promoting sustainable development, strengthening infrastructure and improving governance.
One of the major decisions was the approval of the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026, which seeks to encourage clean and sustainable mobility across the State. Under the policy, individuals purchasing an electric vehicle will receive an incentive of ₹25,000, along with a complete waiver of vehicle registration fees. The government said the initiative is intended to reduce emissions, promote eco-friendly transportation and make electric vehicles more affordable for residents.
The Cabinet also approved ₹22.37 crore towards land compensation for the construction of the 132 kV double-circuit transmission line connecting the 220/132 kV Saisiej Substation to the proposed 132/33 kV, 2×50 MVA Mawkhanu Substation. The approval includes compensation for the Right of Way (RoW) required for the transmission corridor. The project is expected to strengthen Meghalaya’s power transmission network, improve electricity reliability and meet the State’s growing energy demands.
In another significant decision, the Cabinet approved amendments to the New Township Development Agency Rules, 2012, converting the New Shillong Township Development Agency into the New Shillong Development Authority (NSDA). The move is aimed at strengthening urban planning, governance and infrastructure development, while enhancing the institutional capacity required to develop New Shillong into a well-planned and sustainable city.
The Cabinet further approved the continuation of Shri B. M. War, retired Chief Engineer (Civil) of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), as Chief Technical Adviser (Generation).
It also approved the Meghalaya Border Areas Development Department (Research Wing) Service Rules, 2026, providing a framework for the department’s research wing.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved the nomination of dignitaries who will take the salute during Independence Day celebrations at various locations across the State.
