Shillong, August 3: The East Khasi Hills District Administration and Police have launched an intensive investigation after two masked miscreants allegedly hurled a petrol bomb at the office of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) at Lumpyngngad, Shillong, on Monday afternoon. Authorities have assured that those responsible will face strict legal action.
According to police, the incident took place at around 12:10 PM when the two unidentified individuals entered the premises of the MSPCB office and threw a petrol bomb at the building before fleeing the scene.
The petrol bomb struck the outer wall of the office, causing only slight discoloration to the wall. No injuries or casualties were reported, and the physical damage to the property was minimal.
Police personnel immediately rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. The Crime Scene Unit was deployed to collect evidence and document the scene.
A criminal case has been registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station under Case No. 121(08)2026 under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation has been initiated.
In a separate statement, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills said the District Administration has taken the incident seriously. The District Police are analysing forensic evidence, reviewing CCTV footage and other surveillance material to identify the culprits and determine the motive behind the attack. The administration warned that any individual or group found to be directly or indirectly involved would face stringent legal action in accordance with the law.
Security has also been tightened at the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board premises following the incident.
Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, IPS, said all efforts are being made to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The District Administration has appealed to the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified rumours. It has also urged anyone with relevant information or video footage related to the incident to contact the Office of the Superintendent of Police, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential.
