Shillong, August 12: Members of the Tibetan community residing in Meghalaya gathered at Khyndai Lad in Shillong on Wednesday to demand freedom for Tibet from Chinese rule and call for the protection of the rights and dignity of the Tibetan people.
The gathering, held in Shillong as part of similar observances by Tibetan communities across the world, marked the 67th anniversary of the 1959 uprising in Lhasa against Chinese rule. The event also paid tribute to Tibetans who lost their lives during the resistance and expressed support for the 14th Dalai Lama.
During the gathering, members of the Tibetan community sang patriotic songs and carried placards bearing various messages calling for Tibetan freedom and highlighting their struggle against Chinese rule.
The gathering also remembered Lobga Rangzen, who is the first among the self-immolated in protest and in support of the demand for Tibet’s freedom.
As a symbolic form of protest against Chinese rule, members of the Tibetan community shaved their heads at Khyndai Lad during the programme.
The gathering highlighted the Tibetan community’s continuing demand for freedom and its call for the preservation of Tibetan identity, rights and dignity.
