Man Drowns During Rescue of Three Tourists in Wah Rew River, Body Recovered by SDRF

Sohbar, August 21: A 23-year-old man drowned in the Wah Rew River while assisting in the rescue of three tourists who were caught in strong currents during a boating incident near Sohbar. The deceased has been identified as Lateilang Ryngnga, a resident of Sohbar.

According to information available, the incident occurred on August 19 when a boat carrying three tourists — one man and two women — was swept away by strong river currents.

Boatman Bantyllilang Tangdhara of Pdengshnong Sohbar, along with Banteilang Khongsit of Tharia, managed to reach the stranded tourists and safely rescue all three. During the rescue operation, however, Ryngnga was swept underwater and went missing.

A search operation was subsequently launched. On August 21, fishermen from Nongjri spotted a body floating in the river about 60 to 70 metres from the area and immediately informed local authorities and the deceased’s family, who alerted the police.

An SDRF team led by SI Donkupar Diengngan rushed to the spot and recovered the body at around 6.20 pm, downstream of the Wah Rew bridge.

The family requested that no post-mortem examination be conducted. After completion of the necessary formalities and approval from the authorities, the body was handed over to the family for the last rites.
