Shillong, August 24 : East Khasi Hills Police have arrested two persons for allegedly leading a mob attack on three suspected thieves at 11 Mile, Mylliem, in the early hours of August 23.
According to a press release issued by Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, information was received at Mawngap Police Station at around 5.40 AM that members of the public had apprehended three persons suspected of theft. Police personnel rushed to the spot and found a mob assaulting the three persons, identified as Banshan Kurbah, 25, of Lumkyllang, Mairang; Albert Marbaniang, 26, of Mawlai Mawtawar; and Ibalabet Kharmawlong, 27, also of Mawlai Mawtawar.
Police intervened and rescued the trio. During the rescue operation, members of the mob allegedly manhandled police officers and personnel, abused them with offensive language and continued attempting to assault the three persons. The injured were taken to Pomlum PHC for medical examination and subsequently brought to Mawngap Police Station for safe custody.
A Maruti car bearing registration number ML05-T-9837, allegedly used by the three persons, was also towed to the police station. Police said all three suspected thieves were later released after no complaint was received against them from any quarter.
In connection with the mob assault, police registered a suo motu case at Mawngap Police Station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). During the investigation, two persons alleged to have led the mob attack were arrested. They have been identified as Arningson Kharkongor alias Arning, 37, and Pynshaiborlang Kharkongor alias Lung Matok, 33, both residents of Mylliem Kyndong, 11th Mile. Police said the two arrested persons are being produced before the court, while further investigation is underway.
East Khasi Hills Police have appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands and urged people to immediately inform police by dialling 112 or contacting the nearest police station whenever such incidents occur.
