Shillong, September 5: The BJP Meghalaya has strongly condemned an alleged incident involving the insulting of the Holy Bible in the state, expressing deep pain over the act allegedly committed by an individual identified as Sanjay Sharma.
In a statement, BJP Meghalaya Chief Spokesperson M. Kharkrang said the party has always believed in and practised the principles of “positive secularism” and “integral humanism”, asserting that secularism forms an integral part of its culture.
The party said such “irresponsible acts” and a “reprehensible mindset” discredit its values and bring disrepute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It made it clear that people with “narrow, communal mindsets” have no place in the BJP.
Describing the alleged insult to the Bible as a heinous act, the state BJP urged the authorities to take note of the incident and initiate punitive action against the alleged culprit in accordance with the law.
The party also clarified that Sanjay Sharma currently holds no designation in the BJP, stating that he had resigned from his post on May 8, 2026.
The BJP Meghalaya said it was investigating whether Sharma continues to be a primary member of the party and added that strict disciplinary action would be taken if he is found to remain a member.
