Shillong, September 5: The Khasi Jaiñtia Deficit School Teachers Association (KJDSTA) on Saturday demanded that the State Education Department immediately withdraw two notifications issued on August 12 and 19, 2026, which, according to the association, have effectively scrapped teacher recruitment in deficit and government schools.
Speaking to the media, KJDSTA president Boswell Pala said the issuance of the notifications would adversely affect education across the state.
He said representatives of the association had met Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and Commissioner and Secretary of the Education Department Vijay Kumar Mantri, urging the government to withdraw the two notifications as they would have a detrimental impact on the functioning of deficit schools in the years ahead.
Pala clarified that the association was not opposed to the government’s introduction of the Structured Pay Framework (SPF), but said it could not accept the abolition of teacher posts in deficit schools.
KJDSTA general secretary Barbara Lamin questioned the government over several issues, including delays in the monthly payment of salaries to deficit school teachers, vacant teaching posts, lack of clarity over the Contributory Provident Fund/National Pension Scheme, and non-payment of Dearness Allowance at 51 per cent from July 2025 and 53 per cent from January 2026. She also raised the issue of pending arrears of 43 percent for January and February 2024.
Lamin urged the government not to further delay the payment of benefits due to retired school teachers under Death-cum-Retirement Gratuity and other pending dues.
