Shillong, September 7: A 36-year-old woman was arrested after her husband sustained serious head injuries in an alleged axe attack following a domestic dispute at 9 Mer, Baridua, under Khanapara Police Station in Ri-Bhoi district on Sunday night. The injured man has been identified as Sikander Lyngdoh, while the accused has been identified as Poonam Bosper.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 9 pm, with police receiving information at approximately 9:11 pm. Sikander suffered severe head injuries and heavy bleeding and was subsequently taken to Health City Hospital in Guwahati by his brother, Santosh Lyngdoh, for treatment.
Following the incident, Poonam allegedly fled the house. She was apprehended by members of the public on Monday morning while walking along National Highway-27 at Baridua. She was initially taken to the local dorbar before being handed over to Khanapara Police.
According to Sikander’s son, his father had returned home with meat to be cooked when an argument broke out between the couple. The quarrel allegedly escalated into a physical altercation, during which Poonam picked up an axe and struck Sikander on the head several times while he was watching television. The son further alleged that Poonam later threw the weapon into a nearby forested area before fleeing.
During questioning, however, Poonam gave a different account of the incident. She alleged that Sikander had begun assaulting her and their young son during the argument. She reportedly told police that, fearing for herself and her child, she picked up an axe that was within her reach and struck her husband on the head. She further claimed that after Sikander continued moving following the first blow, she struck him several more times out of fear before leaving the house. Police later recovered a bloodstained axe from a forested area near the residence. Baridua village headman Ioanis Narleng condemned the incident and urged the authorities to take appropriate legal action.
Khanapara Police, accompanied by a forensic team, later took Poonam to the residence as part of a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. She was subsequently taken back to the police station for further legal proceedings. Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
