Shillong, September 9: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi to seek greater momentum for capital investment and Externally Aided Projects (EAPs) in the Northeast.
The meeting focused on expediting EAPs in Meghalaya and Assam with the aim of opening up new investment channels for physical and social infrastructure in the two states.
Following the meeting, Sangma thanked the Union Finance Minister for her continued support to Meghalaya and the Northeast. “Met the Hon’ble Union Finance Minister, Smti @nsitharaman ji along with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. @himantabiswa ji to discuss matters relating to Externally Aided Projects. Thank the Union Finance Minister for always supporting the aspirations of Meghalaya and the NE Region,” Sangma wrote on X.
Sarma said the discussions were aimed at increasing capital expenditure in the Northeast. “With an objective to increase capital expenditure into India’s North East, I along with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya Shri @SangmaConrad Ji had a very good meeting with the Hon’ble Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman Ji,” he said in a post on X.
The Assam Chief Minister said both states made a strong case for giving fresh impetus to the implementation of Externally Aided Projects. “We made a strong case to bring a new impetus to the pace of Externally Aided Projects in both of our states, which will open new investment channels for physical and social infrastructure,” Sarma said.
According to Sarma, Sitharaman responded positively to the proposals and assured a renewed push from the Centre to advance the development agenda in the region.
The meeting comes amid continued efforts by Northeastern states to attract larger infrastructure investments and accelerate projects aimed at improving connectivity, public services and economic growth.
